A brand new production of the classic musical, The Fantasticks is coming to London, opening in May 2010 at the Duchess Theatre.

Directed by Amon Miyamoto, a new production of this much-loved musical will invigorate and illuminate the show with fresh visual, emotional and musical energy. Designer Rumi Matsui joins Miyamoto on The Fantasticks following their previous collaboration on the Broadway production of Pacific Overtures for which Matsui’s work was Tony Award nominated. Lighting design will be provided by 2009 Tony Award winner Rick Fisher.

The Fantasticks tells an allegorical story, loosely based on the play The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who put up a wall between their houses to ensure that their children fall in love, because they know children always do what their parents forbid. After the children do fall in love, they discover their fathers' plot and each go off and experience the world. Finally they return to each other and the love they had, having learned from the world to recognise their true feelings. Elements of the musical are drawn from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, its story winding its way through Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream as well as Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore and Rostand's play. Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt’s classic score feature’s titles including Much More, I Can See It and the instantly familiar Try To Remember.

The Fantasticks first played in New York nearly fifty years ago and has since become the longest running show of any kind in the United States and the longest running musical in the world. It has played in over 2000 cities and towns in the States, in more than 10,000 productions. Internationally more than 700 productions have been staged in 67 countries.

Fancy dress

It’s not compulsory to dress up but many people do and it really adds to the fun. Dip into the wardrobe of your imagination and surprise us with your creation.

The pre-show

There is a 30-minute pre-film show during which the host leads you through a vocal warm-up, prepares you for special moments throughout the film and judges the fancy dress competition. Everyone receives a free goody bag with special props for the “magic moments” that make the evening go with a bang.

Running time

With pre-show, the evening lasts about 2 hours 30 mins, including an interval.

The interval

This takes place after about one and a quarter hours and lasts for 15 minutes. Most venues we play at have a bar, which is usually open throughout the evening.

Suitability for children

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 12 certificate film in the UK and so you can only attend if you are 12 or older. Much of the content of the film is raunchy and may not be suitable for the faint-hearted! Remember that the first rule of Sing-a-long-a is THERE ARE NO RULES!

Paul Nicholas stars in this lively rendition of one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operas supported by full cast and orchestra.

Orphaned pirates, flat-footed policemen and a bevy of blushing beauties (the daughters of Major General Stanley) are the perfect ingredients for a fabulous feast of Gilbert and Sullivan. Elegantly recreating the original period settings and costumes, this acclaimed production combines Sullivan’s ever-popular and sparkling score with what has to be the most topsy-turvy of all Gilbert’s plots.

Venture with us into the swashbuckling world of Frederic the pirate apprentice, who – born on February 29th in a leap year – won’t 'come of age' until he is 84!
