The Broadway legend took London’s Old Vic theatre by storm in 2003 – the show had already triumphed in New York, where it won a Tony Award. It triumphed again at the 2004 Emmy Awards, winning not one but two top honours.
The riveting one-woman show is sensational, poignant and incredibly funny. Stritch talks and sings her way through 50 years in American theatre and tells her story. “You’ve got to be real to be funny,” she says early on in the show and she is. Her comic timing is impeccable and her anecdotes are priceless – from a disastrous date with Marlon Brando while they were at drama school together, to failing to get the star role in The Golden Girls because she insulted the writer.
Stritch is also uncompromisingly honest. She admits to having missed most of her life because of her struggle with drink. When she sums herself up as “an existential problem in tights” it is impossible not have huge admiration for a woman who, at the age of 82, can appear on stage in white shirt and tights and knock an audience dead. Elaine Stritch at Liberty was broadcast in the UK on BBC4.

Thar she blows! Batten down the hatches because Bette Midler is blowing into Caesars Palace with the biggest, most imaginative show she's ever done and Vegas may never be the same. Along with her incomparable humor and one of the best song catalogues in American music, Miss M's bringing her fabulous "Kiss My Brass" section. Throw in plenty of girls, gags and guffaws and you've got the kind of experience we refer to as, "divine." The cyclone hits February 20, 2008.
“The energy and given off as all the dancers come together is unsurpassable”
- BBC
“By the time this fantastic show reached its riotous full-cast finale there was a party atmosphere both on stage and in the audience. So much bad news comes out of Africa that one tends to think of it as a dark continent full of cruelty, hunger and disease. This show, in contrast, paints an entirely different picture, creating a spell of humour, warmth and wonder that proves truly irresistible”
- The Daily Telegraph
"A hot- blooded African alternative to Cirque du Soleil"
- The Times
“AFRIKA! AFRIKA! is exuberant, fast-paced and delightfully fuss-free”
“ ****“
- The Independent
André Heller's sensual discovery of Africa fascinates the audience with its tempo, energy and the zest of life that is oozing out of the tent. The troupe travelled through Africa for two years between Mali and Morocco, and Egypt and South Africa, to all the coasts and the heart of the continent. They even searched the African diaspora for more than 100 artists, eccentrics, dancers, singers and musicians who had that special something.
This circus theatre offers sensous pleasure to children and adults, workers and intellectuals. Unbelievable acrobatics, intoxicating rhythms and costumes of exceptional beauty will entrance you for more than two hours.
The pole artists from the troupe Hakuna Matata, (Swahili for no worries here) will have you holding your breath as they elegantly swing back and forth on poles, nearly touching the top of the tent, while other dancers build a dizzingly high human pyramid.
Body eccentrics bend and curve into proud snake-like formations: Feet become hands and hands become feet in a rare spectacle known only to the African tradition of cult-like mastery of bodily movements.
The so-called water man, Dickson Oppong, makes bowls dance on top of a metre-high fountain which is spewing from his mouth.
Juggling ten balls at once is no problem for Abdurazak Reshid Adem. He takes his tarp and throws the balls in the air so fast that you would think they were remaining airborne the entire time.
Then an 11-member group of unicyclists appears and begins playing a surreal game of basketball on wheels, combining physical prowess and comedy. They are accompanied throughout the arena by a strong beat.
And much much more…

FOLLOWING its success at two successive Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, ZooNation’s urban fairytale, Into the Hoods, will transfer to London’s West End – to the Novello Theatre where it runs for a limited season – from March 26 (previews from March 14) to May 10, 2008.
Based on Stephen Sondheim’s 1989 musical, Into the Woods, the hip-hop version follows two children who are lost in the hood. An evil landlord befriends them after they have played truant from school and they are offered a room in his tenement block on the condition they work for him.
Reluctantly the children embark on their mission, which leads them to the flats occupied by Spinderella, where they discover gold Adidas trainers; Lil Red, the owner of a bright red hoodie; Rap-on-Zel, the producer of the finest quality long weave in the city; and Jaxx (who lives in the basement), the owner of a white I-pod.
Kate Prince (Strictly Dance Fever) directs and choreographs Into the Hoods which is performed by 19 adults and nine children (three on stage). Many of the professional dancers have worked with celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Nelly Furtado, Pink, Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce and Snoop Dogg.
ZooNation performs its trademark street dance/theatre style to music from Gorillaz, Massive Attack, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, James Brown, Snoop Dogg, Bob Marley, the Chemical Brothers and others.
They have previously appeared on television in Blue Peter, The Late Edition and Popworld; and made live appearances at events like West End Live, the official Olympic Celebration in Trafalgar Square and the opening ceremony for the Tour de France. They also took part in the hip hop festival Breakin’ Convention at Sadler’s Wells.
Prior to each show, a nightly warm-up will be provided by comedy rap poet Mister Gee.
Into the Hoods is presented in the West End by Phil McIntyre and Adam Speers.
Princess Aurora is put into a deep sleep by the Lilac Fairy to prevent her untimely death after she is cursed by the evil fairy Carabosse. A century later is awakened with a kiss by the handsome Prince Florimund.
With music by Tchaikovsky, the ballet includes his famous and lyrical Waltz and the Rose Adage as Aurora meets in turn her four princely suitors.
