Buddy
The long running rock ‘n’ roll musical biography of 50s recording star Buddy Holly, returns to London in August for a West End run at the Duchess theatre.

Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story, to give it its full title, is a musical journey through the tragically short career of young rock ‘n’ roll star Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in February 1959 aged 22. Charting the three years from the musician’s first recording contract through his move to New York and the fatal tour of Midwest America with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, the show sees Buddy singing his way from the recording studio in Nashville Tennessee to Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, culminating in a live rock ‘n’ roll finale at the Winter Dance Party. Along the way the musical features over 20 of Buddy’s greatest hits including Peggy Sue, That’ll Be The Day, Oh Boy, Rave On, Heartbeat and Raining In My Heart.

Buddy is written by Alan Janes and Rob Bettinson, who produce and direct the production respectively.

International television and film star Pamela Anderson joins illusionist Hans Klok – the world’s fastest magician — in The Beauty of Magic, the new show at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Theater for the Performing Arts.

"The stage spectacular will combine the illusions of Klok, fresh off his sold-out European tour with brand new illusions created just for Las Vegas, with the electrifying Anderson in a completely new and unique production," stated press notes.

"I love magic! I love doing things out of the ordinary and of course I'm always up for an adventure, as this will definitely be one,” said Anderson, the former “Baywatch” star. “I knew that one day my dream of being a Vegas showgirl would come true — even better a magician’s assistant. It’s every girl’s fantasy. I'm thrilled!"

After performing his first magic trick at the age of ten, Hans Klok went on to win a number of magician championships as a young man, including the European Youth Magician Champion Trophy, the Tommy Cooper Trophy and first prize at the Grand Prix of The Netherlands. He soon began to appear on television specials in both Europe and the United States, including “The World’s Greatest Magic” on NBC and “The Masters of Magic” on ABC. Now hailed as the fastest magician in the world and “The Dutch Copperfield,” Klok’s live stage shows have been selling out large arenas throughout Europe and Asia for the past decade.

The Importance of Being Earnest is one of the most popular plays ever written. Subtitled ‘A trivial comedy for serious people’, it is bursting with hilarious lines and extraordinary twists of fate and sparkles with the witty dialogue of its genteel protagonists.

Prim-and-proper Jack Worthington is in love with the equally prim-and-proper Gwendolyn Fairfax. His friend, Algernon Moncrieff, is in love with Cecily Cardew. But both Gwendolyn and Cecily are in love with Ernest. Add the magnificently imposing Lady Bracknell, a nanny with a dubious story about a handbag and the result is a delightful entertainment as fresh and funny as when it was first performed in 1895.

Penelope Keith, one of Britain’s best-loved actresses, was born to play Lady Bracknell. Her many previous theatre appearances include Time and the Conways, Blithe Spirit, Entertaining Angels and Relatively Speaking. Her numerous television series include the hugely successful The Good Life and To the Manor Born.

Peter Gill is one of our most distinguished and acclaimed directors. At the Royal Court Theatre in the sixties, he was responsible for introducing D H Lawrence’s plays to the theatre, and was the founding director of Riverside Studios and the National Theatre Studio. He has directed more than eighty productions in the UK. Europe and North America.

Ain't a man's talking big what makes him big – long as he makes folk believe it? Sure I talks large when I ain't got nothing to back it up.
Southern American ex-convict, Brutus Jones, aided by his double-crossing British ally, Smithers, connives his way into an uncompromising dictatorship over a remote island in the West Indies. Faced with a terrifying people's revolt, the delusional Emperor escapes to the dark forest and a promise of salvation.
But in the searing heat and to the ominous pulse of his trackers' drums, Jones is driven to make his way through every lead bullet in his gun, right down to the silver one he is saving for himself.
O'Neill's controversial 1920 play is by turns shocking and mesmerising. Thea Sharrock's production for The Gate was a theatrical highlight of 2005 and she now reconceives it for the Olivier, with Paterson Joseph reprising one of the most critically acclaimed performances of recent years.
'A shattering piece of theatre' Guardian
'Paterson Joseph is magnificent' Independent

Consistently funny, Jason is one of the most exciting and popular stand-up comics on the UK and international comedy scene. Now he is bringing his brand new sell-out show to London’s West End.

“I saw Jason Byrne for the first time the other week. I had never seen him before then, but he is a star. I couldn’t begin to describe his material other than to say that when he stands in front of people for more than 20 seconds they begin to laugh out loud – and they don’t stop until he goes away. Jason Byrne is such a mad hybrid, so instinctual that above everything else, you are just blown away by the sheer force of his talent and charisma.”
The Independent

“Watching Jason Byrne on stage is like watching Ronaldinho play for Barcelona. It’s not a matter of if the magic will come, but when and how often. He’s effortlessly masterful. If you leave disappointed from this show, don’t ever bother going to see comedy again.”
Edinburgh Evening News

'Awesome, amazing, brilliant, hilarious and the outright King of Live Comedy.'
The Times

'Part Spike Milligan, part Duracell Bunny…total genius'
Independent

'If you're not on the floor helpless with laughter… you're probably dead!'

Mark Watson theatre tickets, Apollo Theatre, London

Aug 16, 2007 Author: | Filed under: Comedy

Mark Watson deserves his moment. Having proved to be one of the true innovators on the Fringe with his marathon comedy sessions, off-the-cuff novel writing and participation in daft quizzes, his solo hour of stand-up has grown in stature and scope in successive years and now he is playing in one of the Courtyard’s biggest rooms, promoted from the sweatboxes to a grand theatre space. This is both a tribute to his talent and cause for a slight qualification; much of Watson’s show relies on any given punchline being pushed on a line or two. In the intimate rooms, this is all fine and good, but in this vast expanse, much of the material loses its impact, drowned out in the cascading waves of laughter.

But this is a minor quibble in a set which exhilarates from its democratic beginning as he springs like an über-Welsh jack-in-the-box from the middle of the crowd before eventually making his way to the stage. From there, he launches into the show’s beef, inspired by his last birthday when a series of unfortunate incidents appeared to be sparked by a chance encounter with an evangelist whose impertinent query spawned the show’s typically elongated title, Can I Briefly Talk to You About the Point of Life?

There is, of course, nothing brief in the way Watson ekes out the droplets of humour from each comedic opening as this seemingly nervy individual becomes both excited and confused by the world around him. No one should begrudge the industrious Mark Watson his spot in the limelight; just make sure when you go that you’re at the front of the longest queue in Edinburgh. (Brian Donaldson)

Shadowlands theatre tickets, Wyndhams Theatre, London

Aug 15, 2007 Author: | Filed under: Plays

Set in Oxford in the 1950s, Shadowlands tells the true love story of CS Lewis (Dance) and Joy Gresham (Dee). Lewis, a leading Christian academic and author of many classic books including The Chronicles of Narnia, remained a bachelor until his fifties, when he met Joy. Enchanted by the American divorcee, he secretly married her and cared for her when she became terminally ill. His encounter with love and loss led him to reconsider many of the beliefs he had previously held so staunchly.
Nicholson adapted his play – which won the Evening Standard Award for Play of the Year and was nominated for three Oliviers - for a 1993 film which starred Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger and was directed by Richard Attenborough.
